With the onset of warm weather, citizens from spring to late autumn ride bicycles to work, to the beach, to the store, and just for fun, and some cyclists can be found even in winter.

However, not all cyclists are careful when moving on this type of transport. Driving at speeds on the sidewalks, they, firstly, endanger not only their own health, but also the health of pedestrians. Secondly, they create emergency situations at pedestrian crossings, intersections and other places. Therefore, when driving on bicycles, you must follow the rules of the road and move very attentively and carefully. For this, the use of bicycle lanes is desirable.

Bicycle lanes system should link the main areas of cities – central, northern and southern, as well as attractive places for recreation and sports (stadiums, parks, beaches, historical sights). With the advent of the cycle path system, any cyclist will be able to get to anywhere in the city and region.

Bicycle lanes should be as safe as possible and be based on the city planning rules, building codes, traffic rules and local peculiarities in order to prevent possible injuries and damage to property of both cyclists, motorists and pedestrians. Bicycle lanes must be with borders, they must have common markup. In areas where bicycle lanes may be adjacent to highways, it is necessary to install appropriate road signs. It is also necessary to provide conditions for the possible prevention of movement of pedestrians on the bicycle lanes, especially with baby carriages, and of motor vehicles such as scooters and motorcycles.

Pavement of bicycle lanes should be smooth and materials should be selected in accordance with the terrain and local climatic conditions. There should be no hatches on the way of cyclists, except for those whose height corresponds to the level of the bicycle lane itself. In addition, bicycle lanes should be convenient for the work of special equipment for cleaning garbage and snow. The system of bicycle lanes should include universal bicycle parking for different models of bicycles with the possibility of fixation to protect against theft. Bicycle parking should be located near institutions, attractive places of tourism, recreation, sports facilities, as well as shopping centers and shops. It would not be bad if they were provided with a video surveillance system.

In recent years traffic police officers and doctors have noted a surge in cycling injuries. Very often, people on bicycles are injured, not just crossing a street or a road contrary to the rules of the road, but even on equipped bicycle lanes.

After all, they do not cross a crosswalk, keeping the bike close, as it should be according to the rules, but at speed jump over it, i.e. they practically drive in under the wheels of the car. Probably each of us sees such cases every day in the city. Unfortunately, the one who rides a bicycle does not think about the fact that cyclists’ trauma from a fall or collision is not an ordinary fracture.

According to experts, cycling injuries are classified as “high-energy”. These are not just fractures that can be fixed with a bandage and you can be sure that everything will heal. These are, as a rule, fragmented, comminuted fractures, in which surgical treatment does not always give good results.

Be attentive and mutually polite to yourself and those around you to prevent undesirable consequences during such a massive and useful occupation of riding a bicycle!
